The Incheon Metropolitan City Museum (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it will accept applications for its 2026 28th Museum University second-half program, which begins on October 23, from October 1 to 21.
Museum University is an adult education program run annually by the City Museum. It is a public lecture series designed to help citizens engage with history, culture, and the humanities in an accessible yet in-depth way. Over the years, it has served as a channel through which citizens can attend lectures by expert researchers free of charge.
This second-half program, held under the theme ‘History as a Mirror,’ does not stop at examining major events and figures in history. It is designed to encourage participants to reflect together on what the choices and judgments of each era mean for our society and lives today. The program consists of four lectures spanning several fields, including Korean history, Western history, and classical Chinese literature.
The first lecture, by Professor Kim Won-jung of Dankook University, is titled ‘The Records of the Grand Historian (Sagi): An Eternal Treasury of Humanity,’ and explores the human lives, emotions, and perceptions of the age contained in the classic Sagi. In the second lecture, Professor Han Myung-ki of Myongji University, under the theme ‘Reflecting on Joseon’s Foreign Relations in an Age of Upheaval,’ examines the diplomacy and foreign relations of Joseon as it lived through turbulent times, along with the choices made then.
The third lecture, by Park Hyun-mo, director of the Sejong Leadership Institute, offers a fresh interpretation of King Sejong’s rule and leadership under the theme ‘Reconsidering Sejong: Great Ideas and Regrettable Choices.’ In the final lecture, Professor Emeritus Joo Kyung-chul of Seoul National University, under the theme ‘Louis XIV, the Light and Shadow of the Sun King,’ looks into the lights and shadows of the politics and society of the time through Louis XIV, the symbol of absolute monarchy.
This program focuses not merely on conveying historical facts, but on considering together what the choices, judgments, ideas, and institutions of each era mean for us today. It is designed to help citizens broaden their perspective on understanding humanity and society by using history as a mirror that reflects the present.
Kim Tae-ik, director of the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum, said, ‘This second-half program is a time to look back on today’s life and society through the figures and events of history,’ adding, ‘We hope for the active participation of citizens interested in history and the humanities.’
The lectures will be held four times in total, every Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., from October 23 to November 13, at Seongnam Hall on the first floor of the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum. Any citizen of Incheon may participate free of charge.
Enrollment is available from October 1 to 21 through the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum website, by telephone, and via QR code. For inquiries, contact the City Museum (☎032-440-6732, 6750).
