The Broadcasting, Media and Communications Commission (BMCC) visited a site conducting core artificial intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D) in the broadcasting and media field to review its progress and listen to the difficulties faced by researchers. The BMCC (chaired by Kim Jong-chul) and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) held a ‘Broadcasting-Media Artificial Intelligence Developer Roundtable’ on the 17th at Gemunaisoft Co., Ltd., which is carrying out a related government R&D project.

The roundtable was arranged so that the BMCC could visit a technology-development site in person to discuss ways to apply R&D outcomes in the field and to support their commercialization, at a time when AI-driven content production and personalized services are spreading rapidly across the broadcasting and media industry.

The roundtable was attended by Chairman Kim Jong-chul of the BMCC, along with some 20 people, including officials from broadcasters such as SBS Co., Ltd., the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and MBC Chungbuk (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation), and researchers affiliated with research institutions such as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI). Broadcasters, developers and research institutions came together in one place to share AI technology trends in the broadcasting and media field and the progress of government R&D projects, and to discuss future plans.

In particular, participants exchanged a range of views on how technologies could transform the way broadcasting media is produced and delivered going forward — including technology that allows even non-experts to search for, generate and edit desired video while conversing naturally with AI, and technology that analyzes a user’s viewing history and content context to recommend and generate content suited to the individual.

Measures to support the application and commercialization of R&D outcomes on actual broadcasting sites were also discussed. Researchers shared the difficulties they face in the field and their future technology-development needs, such as securing the data and computing resources required during the technology-development process, conducting demonstrations using broadcasters and platforms, and commercializing the technologies they develop.

Chairman Kim Jong-chul, who toured the R&D site and facilities in person that day, said, ‘We will faithfully reflect the opinions raised in the field by researchers and companies in our R&D policy, and actively support the developed technologies so that they lead to field application and commercialization, thereby backing the AI-driven transformation (AX) and the securing of global competitiveness in the broadcasting and media industry.’ He went on to stress that ‘as the broadcasting and media industry is undergoing fundamental change — from the way content is created to the way the public uses it — it is above all important not only to secure excellent AI technology but also to apply it to actual broadcast production and service sites.’

Through the ‘Digital Media Innovation Technology Development’ project, worth 72.7 billion won and running from this year through 2030, the BMCC is pursuing AI-based innovation in broadcasting and media. If the technologies developed through this project are applied to actual broadcasting and platform sites, they are expected not only to reduce the time and cost of content production but also to lead to personalized media experiences and the creation of new services and businesses, contributing to strengthening the AI competitiveness of the domestic broadcasting and media industry. From the viewer’s perspective, this is expected to bring tangible changes to the media-use environment, such as more convenient access to content that matches their own tastes.
